When prepared in the nanoparticle form, magnetite can be prone to oxidation, which can lead to the formation of maghemite. Applying a molecular coating to the as prepared nanoparticles may have an effect on this process, influencing the magnetite/maghemite ratio and thereby the structural and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles. In this work we investigated the effects of coatings made of different (citric and mandelic) carboxylic acids on freshly synthesized magnetite nanoparticles.
